About the Webinar:
Since ancient times humans have been obsessed with figuring out the secrets of the night sky. In the old days this took the form of mythological stories with fearsome characters imprinting their will on the cosmos and humans as merely passive spectators in the divine show. Over time, as the modern scientific method got developed, we abandoned these childish stories in favour of quantitative measurement. Nowadays, astronomy is a precision science that has made great strides in helping us understand our true place in the cosmos. Now humans are not just passive spectators, but active participants in unravelling the mysteries of the universe. In this talk, we will first take a historical approach and explain how the names of the various constellations came to be (and the mythology associated with them). Then we will turn to the observational side and discuss how one can locate and identify some important constellations and use them for navigation. Finally, I will give a demonstration of the wonderful, open-source software called Stellarium and teach the audience how to use it for their own observational purposes.
