The ECO Science Foundation in collaboration with UNESCO and Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) is co-organizing a Sub-regional Experts Meeting on Groundwater Management on August 3-4, 2017 in Islamabad. The objective of holding this meeting is to highlight the importance of sustainable use of groundwater and develop recommendations to address the key challenges of groundwater in the region. Groundwater resources constitute the foundation for the agricultural production, fisheries and aquaculture that provide nutrition and income. These resources also support the production of livestock and forest products that provide food, fuel, fodder and building materials crucial for the livelihoods of rural families. However, these resources are under increasing stress due to over-exploitation, conflicts over rights, and broader anthropogenic environmental change throughout the region. Thus groundwater depletion is a major concern in the region particularly due to shortfall in the surface water supplies and poor groundwater management. This meeting is being organized to enhance the regional cooperation and collaboration to address the challenges. The meeting intends to bring together expert scientists, engineers, water resources managers, and practitioners from the four countries and ECO region countries.
