2017 International Conference on Innovations in Electrical Engineering and Computational Technologies (ICIEECT) was held at the Prof. Salimuzzaman Siddiqui Auditorium of International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, LEJ National Science Information Center, Karachi from 5-7 April, 2017.The ICIEECT was organized by Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology, Indus University Karachi under the technical sponsorship by IEEE Karachi Section and Patronage of Higher Education Commission Islamabad. The ICIEECT aimed to offer a great opportunity to bring together academicians, researchers and scholars around the globe a great platform to deliver the latest innovative research results and the emerging developments and trends in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Computational Technologies. The conference featured invited talks from eminent personalities all around the world, pre-conference tutorial/workshops, poster presentations and referred and peer reviewed paper presentations. The conference scope covered: Power, Energy and Power Electronics; communication, Networking and Broadcast Technologies; computing and Processing; Components, Circuits, Devices and Systems; signal Processing and Analysis.
Chairman of Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) Engr. Jawed Saleem Qureshi was the Chief Guest, while President of ECO Science Foundation Prof. Dr. Manzoor Hussain Soomro was the Guest of Honour. Engineer Qureshi welcomed the international participants and speakers and congratulated all stakeholders for organizing the event. He also shared with participants the reforms that he had initiated in PEC particularly for the young engineers.
Dr. Soomro in his speech in the inaugural welcomed all the participants and congratulated the organizers of the conference for holding the international conference. He encouraged all researcher engineers to link up with their counterparts in other ECO member countries and assured that ECOSF will be pleased to support such collaborations. In his key note speech, Professor Soomro highlighted the importance and role of engineers in the economic development, which have an inherent impact on our lives. Dr. Soomro endorsed that engineers provide fundamental services that are essential in our lives and there is no denying that without their contribution, this world cannot move reasonably forward.
Prof. Dr. Soomro spoke about a dramatic revolution that is fundamentally changing the lives and businesses. This new industrial revolution is the Fourth Industrial Revolution or Industry 4.0. It is a fusion of technologies, which is synergizing all previous industrial revolutions that is connecting the boundaries between the physical, digital, and biological dimensions. According to Dr. Soomro, 4th Industrial Revolution combines and incorporates the digital revolution with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and biotechnologies.
Dr. Soomro asserted that the 4th industrial revolution is disrupting the industry infrastructures. Whereas; Uber, Careem and AirBnB are some of the best business models or examples, that have come out as outcome of this new industrial revolution. “This is extremely fascinating as these businesses are disrupting the gigantic industries that currently operate in a conventional system”, he said.
Dr. Soomro affirmed that the role and responsibility of young engineers is ever increasing and becoming more important as they are set to unlock many such possibilities that will entirely change the way businesses operates. He strongly felt the need to sharpen skill-sets and to make investment in young engineers to be able to deal with changing engineering and technological landscape. The revolution is happening around us, he said. And one must rise to the challenge to meet it and thrive in the new industrial revolution.
Dr. Soomro believed that Pakistan is going through its critical phase of rapid infrastructure development, which will have far reaching consequences on our economy. China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is an extraordinary initiative and it is set to bring prosperity and development in the country and a great opportunity for Pakistan to build its basic infrastructure; like energy, water, transportation, as well as virtual connectivity through ICT. He also shared the ongoing programme of ECOSF in collaboration with UNESCO and Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia & the Pacific (FEIAP), “Engineering Qualification Standardization and Accreditation and Professional Systems” in ECO Region. The programme develops the capacity and capability of Engineers for mobility and acceptance in other countries.
Dr. Soomro emphasized that there is a tremendous potential of ICT in Pakistan. Considering this potential, ECOSF has launched an App Development Contest i.e. AppIdea2R (Application Idea to Reality) to encourage the young engineers and students to unlock this potential and address the development challenges, he said.
In conclusion, Dr. Soomro reiterated that nation owes it to the potential engineers of the future to give them every opportunity to understand and start the journey of development. He concluded that one must move into the right direction by empowering young engineers, as future economic standing and development of Pakistan solely depends on our ability to nurture Pakistan’s future generation of engineers.
