International Forum on Engineering Capacity held in Beijing, China

International Forum on Engineering Capacity was held in Beijing China on November 21-23, 2018. The forum was organized by China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and supported by World Federation for Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and Pacific (FEIAP) and UNESCO.
The theme of the forum was Capacity Building for a Shared and Better Future of Mankind. The 3-day forum consisted of a plenary session, two parallel sessions, as well as on-site visits to China’s engineering endeavors. Various stakeholders, mainly the engineering organizations, governmental agencies, enterprises, international/regional organizations and media, were engaged to discuss strengthening engineering capacity, especially improving engineering education and sharing engineering practice standards, which are compulsory for enhancing mutual understanding and engineers’ mobility around the world, and ultimately achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Prof. Manzoor Hussain Soomro was invited as head of ECOSF- a collaborating organization of CAST.
Prof. WANG Qinglin, Deputy Director General CAST opened the forum and welcome remarks were given by Prof. SHU Wei, Executive Secretary CAST. Prof. Gong Ke President –elect of World Federation of Engineering Organization (WFEO) and Prof. Shahbaz Khan, Director and Representative UNESCO Regional Science Bureau for Asia and The Pacific made speeches in opening session and discussed importance of Engineering Capacity and its standards for Sustainable Development.
In the 2 plenary sessions and Parallel Sessions Speakers from all over the world shared their regional engineering capacity and the standards they are using and working on. In the closing session Prof. WANG Qinglin appreciated the warmth contributions of the participants from different parts of the world. He emphasized on globalization and international mobility of engineers, future oriented engineering education accreditation system and engineering capacity standards and sustainable development. At the end in closing, a consensus statement was agreed upon by the participants. The main points of the statement are highlighted below.
- Vision & Mission-“ensure sustainable development and to promote the international flow of engineering professionals so as to build a future for sustainable development”.
- Unanimous Action- “to work together to develop engineering competency standards, promote engineering education reform and engineering capacity trainings”.
- Cooperation platform- “using this platform in promoting mutual communication within global engineering and cooperation on large scale”.
- Certification system- “to promote an international communication among engineers and to promote the international mutual recognition of the engineering education standard and engineering capacity standard worldwide”.
The Forum called upon the global engineering community to put high value on the construction of a globally applicable engineering profession certification system. The Forum committed to vigorously promote engineering capacity building through global dialogue and collaboration and work together to enhance global engineers’ capabilities to create a better future for human kind.
