International Youth Day 2016: “The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production”

President ECO Science Foundation as Guest of the Day Live in Radio Talk Show "Rabta" (Contact) at Radio Pakistan, Islamabad 13 August 2016

International Youth Day (IYD) is an awareness day designated by the United Nations. The first IYD was observed on 12 August, 2000. The prime purpose of the day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. Also it is meant as an opportunity for governments and others to draw attention to youth issues worldwide.

The theme of the 2016 International Youth Day is “The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production”. To celebrate this awareness day Radio Pakistan invited Prof. Dr. Manzoor Hussain Soomro in a National hook up program “Rabta” which is broadcasted around the country and abroad also. President ECOSF appreciated the initiative of Radio Pakistan for dedicating the program on this special and very important day. Dr. Soomro highlighted the history and prime purposes of the youth day. He emphasized the leading role of young people in ensuring poverty eradication and achieving sustainable development through sustainable consumption and production.

Dr. Soomro said that Sustainable consumption entails the use of products and services that meet the basic needs of communities while safeguarding the needs of future generations. The development and promotion of individual choices and actions that increase the eco-efficiency of consumption of all and minimizing waste and pollution is critical to achieving equitable socioeconomic development.

Dr. Soomro urged youth of Pakistan to organize among themselves and function as agent of change. He also suggested to Govt. organizations, NGOs and parents to trust and support youth.  He then highlighted the ECOSF programs, App Idea 2R which is particularly for the involvement and development of youth to attain UN SDGs. Dr. Soomro also gave a brief introduction of ECOSF inquiry based science education (IBSE) program, in which school children are motivated to inquire and discover in order to develop critical and  innovative thinking that will further contribute to the development of society, since today’s child is the future of society’s tomorrow.

He also emphasized that people and civic society should join hands with the government and youth can make their own forums where they can participate and contribute towards the betterment of the society.

Prof. Soomro concluded his talk by urging the youth to organize among themselves into associations with positive potential and energy that can contribute to each of the SDGs by joining hands together with the government, international organization, corporate and private sector and NGOs as well.
