Science, Technology and Innovations are the need of time, said the Minister S&T during World Science Day commemoration

The World Science Day for Peace and Development (WSDPD) was commemorated at Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) on 13 Nov 2018. WSDPD is celebrated every year throughout the world to underline the significance and relevance of science in our daily lives. This year’s theme “Science, a Human Right”, recognize the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations.

The Chief Guest of the ceremony was the Minister for Science and Technology of Pakistan, H.E. Mr. Muhammad Azam Khan Swati. During his speech, the Minister said that the nations who knew the importance of Science, Technology and Innovations (STI) and put the significance amount of their GDP on science and research, have achieved the marvelous development and prosperity. He further said that the youth of Pakistan is very intelligent and hard worker, only they require the right direction and right policies.

Earlier, Chairman PSF Major (R) Qaiser Majeed Malik welcomed the Federal Minister S&T of Pakistan and other distinguished guests. He briefly highlighted the importance of World Science Day and its history and said the the concept of celebrating world science days was proposed to UN by Pakistan’s renowned scientists Dr. Ishfaque Ahmed which was well considered and since 2001, the Day is observed worldwide. He also shared the scientific activities of PSF with reference to this Day.

A detailed presentation on the history of WSDPD was given by Prof. Qasim Jan, Advisor of COMSTECH and said that the science is fundamental right of humans so the people should realize and act accordingly.

Prof. Manzoor H. Soomro, President ECOSF attended the event as an invited speaker and guest. In his remarks, he appreciated and congratulated the Pakistan Science Foundation for celebrating the WSDPD which provided the opportunity to all the participants to underline the importance of Science.   He further said that

Science has played a critical role in the development of this world, and scientific innovations and inventions have led to significant technological advancements, which have continuously improved our lives. He also said that it is quite encouraging to see the rapid industrialization and economic boost achieved by the Four Asian Tigers (Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan). Despite their low natural endowments, these economies have achieved exceptionally high economic growth. The unprecedented high economic growth is mainly linked to their supportive policies and investments in Science and Technology sectors, which have enabled them to establish competitive edge among the top world economies.

Director UNESCO Pakistan Ms. Jensen Vibeke was also attended the celebration and reiterated the support of UNESCO for this noble cause.

The large number of students was also present in the event and listened to the distinguished speakers who shared their wisdom regarding the day. At the end, some students who got various positions in their studies were awarded the prizes and certificates.
